What to Expect During Your Pelvic Ultrasound Scan

At International Ultrasound Services, we strive to make your experience as comfortable and stress-free as possible.

Here's what you can expect during your pelvic ultrasound scan:

Before your scan:

For a transabdominal ultrasound: You'll be asked to come with a full bladder, so please drink 1liter (around 2 pints or 4.5 glasses) of water one hour before your scan. A full bladder helps to create clearer images.

For a transvaginal ultrasound: No special preparation is usually needed.

During your scan:

  •  Our sonographer will explain the procedure, answering any questions you may have.
  • You'll be asked to lie down on a comfortable examination table and expose your lower abdomen.
  • A warm, water-based gel will be applied to your skin. This gel helps the ultrasound probe make good contact and transmit clear images.
    Transabdominal Scan: If you're having a transabdominal ultrasound, the sonographer will gently move the probe across your lower abdomen.
    Transvaginal Scan: If a transvaginal ultrasound is required, you'll be provided with a cover for privacy. The sonographer will gently insert a smaller probe into your vagina. This probe is covered with a protective sheath and lubricated for your comfort.
    During the scan the ultrasound images will be displayed on a monitor in real-time. The sonographer will take measurements and assess the appearance of your pelvic organs.
  • Once the scan is complete, the sonographer will discuss the findings with you right away and provide you with a detailed report.
    After your scan:

You can wipe off the gel and get dressed.
You can usually resume your normal activities immediately.

The scan itself is painless. You may feel some slight pressure from the probe, but it shouldn't be uncomfortable.
The entire procedure usually takes around 5-10 minutes.
