What is a Pelvic Ultrasound?
A pelvic ultrasound is a safe and painless imaging technique that uses sound waves to create detailed pictures of the organs and structures within your pelvis.
This includes your:
- Uterus (womb): The pear-shaped organ where a fetus grows during pregnancy.
- Endometrium: The lining of the uterus.
- Ovaries: The two small organs that produce eggs and hormones.
- Fallopian tubes: The tubes that connect the ovaries to the uterus.
- Cervix: The lower, narrow part of the uterus that opens into the vagina.
- Bladder: The organ that stores urine.
At International Ultrasound Services, we use state-of-the-art ultrasound technology to provide clear and accurate images, allowing our expert sonographers to assess the health of your pelvic organs.
There are two main types of pelvic ultrasounds:
- Transabdominal ultrasound: The ultrasound probe is moved across your lower abdomen. This is often done with a full bladder, as it helps to get clearer images.
- Transvaginal ultrasound: A smaller probe is gently inserted into your vagina to get a closer look at your pelvic organs. This type of scan provides more detailed images of the uterus and ovaries.
A pelvic ultrasound is a valuable tool for diagnosing a variety of conditions and monitoring your overall pelvic health. It's a simple and non-invasive procedure that can provide important information about your reproductive system
Why Might I Need a Pelvic Ultrasound?
A pelvic ultrasound is a versatile diagnostic tool used to investigate a wide range of gynaecological concerns. Here are some common reasons why your doctor might recommend a pelvic ultrasound:
Investigating Symptoms:
- Abnormal vaginal bleeding: This includes heavy periods, irregular periods, bleeding between periods, or post-menopausal bleeding.
- Pelvic pain: A pelvic ultrasound can help identify the cause of persistent or recurring pain in your lower abdomen.
- Unusual vaginal discharge: Changes in discharge can sometimes indicate an infection or other issue.
Assessing Reproductive Health:
- Infertility: Ultrasounds can help assess the health of your uterus and ovaries, and check for any conditions that may be affecting your fertility.
- Fibroids or cysts: These are common growths that can develop in the uterus or ovaries.
- Endometriosis: This condition occurs when tissue similar to the lining of the uterus grows outside the uterus.
- Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS): PCOS is a hormonal disorder that can affect the ovaries.
Other Reasons:
- Locating an intrauterine device (IUD): An ultrasound can confirm the placement of your IUD.
- Monitoring early pregnancy: Ultrasounds can be used to confirm pregnancy and monitor the early development of a foetus.
- Evaluating pelvic masses: If a mass is detected during a physical exam, an ultrasound can help determine its size, location, and composition.
If you're experiencing any gynaecological symptoms or have concerns about your pelvic health, don't hesitate to talk to your doctor. They can determine if a pelvic ultrasound is right for you.

What to Expect During Your Pelvic Ultrasound Scan
At International Ultrasound Services, we strive to make your experience as comfortable and stress-free as possible.
Here's what you can expect during your pelvic ultrasound scan:
Before your scan:
For a transabdominal ultrasound: You'll be asked to come with a full bladder, so please drink 1liter (around 2 pints or 4.5 glasses) of water one hour before your scan. A full bladder helps to create clearer images.
For a transvaginal ultrasound: No special preparation is usually needed.
During your scan:
- Our sonographer will explain the procedure, answering any questions you may have.
- You'll be asked to lie down on a comfortable examination table and expose your lower abdomen.
- A warm, water-based gel will be applied to your skin. This gel helps the ultrasound probe make good contact and transmit clear images.
Transabdominal Scan: If you're having a transabdominal ultrasound, the sonographer will gently move the probe across your lower abdomen.
Transvaginal Scan: If a transvaginal ultrasound is required, you'll be provided with a cover for privacy. The sonographer will gently insert a smaller probe into your vagina. This probe is covered with a protective sheath and lubricated for your comfort.
During the scan the ultrasound images will be displayed on a monitor in real-time. The sonographer will take measurements and assess the appearance of your pelvic organs. - Once the scan is complete, the sonographer will discuss the findings with you right away and provide you with a detailed report.
After your scan:
You can wipe off the gel and get dressed.
You can usually resume your normal activities immediately.
The scan itself is painless. You may feel some slight pressure from the probe, but it shouldn't be uncomfortable.
The entire procedure usually takes around 5-10 minutes.
Our experienced sonographers will guide you through every step and answer any questions you have, ensuring you feel comfortable and informed throughout the process.
